The story behind the track goes something like this. For some time I have wanted to produce a track that features the vocals of Diane Charlemagne. She is more well known for her incredible vocals on many of Moby’s tracks and of course – Inner City Life by Goldie as well as providing vocals for numerous Drum and Bass tracks in the early 00’s.
I met Diane way back in 1999 when I was studying for my degree in music in Bath. She had come down to lead a vocal workshop. At the time I was working in a club in my hometown in Salisbury – my boyfriend and 2 of his friends had rented a building and were trying to make the impossible possible in our quiet medieval city of Salisbury and create events that focussed on the UK Garage, Drum & Bass, House and Breakbeat scenes that we all loved. It was a risk in a small city such as Salisbury, but we were all passionate and determined to try and make it a success.
I spoke to Diane about the club after the vocal workshop and she offered to come down from London one night with some friends and support it. I didn’t think for one minute she would actually come – but she stayed true to her word and came a few weeks later.
Very sadly, she passed away from Cancer in 2015 at the age of 51 and for a few years I have wanted to produce a track that pays tribute to her. I searched for an accapella and found one that inspired me to make this track.
I have used the vocals of ‘Why’ by Carly Simon sung by Diane and produced a track that is entirely different from the original song, but hopefully keeping the melancholic, soulful and balearic feel that the original had.
She was a truly wonderful, down to earth and supportive person who was taken far too young and I hope I’ve done her justice with this production.

All proceeds for 'Why' will be donated to Cancer Research UK
